What is a Solicitor?

A solicitor is a lawyer who deals with all legal matters including dealing with court proceedings.

In the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, in a few Australian states and in the Republic of Ireland, the legal profession is split between barristers and solicitors, and a lawyer will normally hold just one title. However, in most Australian states, New Zealand and Canada, the legal profession is now fused together, meaning that lawyers can hold the title of "barrister and solicitor" and can therefore practice as either. The distinction between barristers and solicitors does however remain. Sometimes legal graduates will start their career as either a solicitor or barrister, deciding later on to change and become the other.
